Absolutely not.
Carso Trail is not a race: there will be no final rankings and no winners.
We prefer to call it an adventure, where everyone is free to interpret the experience in their own way.
Our advice is to set yourself a time goal based on your abilities, but if along the route you find yourself captivated by a breathtaking view, a scent, or an unexpected detail, stop and enjoy it.
Carso Trail is an UNSUPPORTED Adventure and, as one of the first bike trails in Italy, aims to preserve the authentic spirit of early bikepacking: being fully self-sufficient throughout the route and carrying everything you need with you.
You do not need to be a competitive athlete to complete the route.
However, you should have some determination and be prepared to spend eight to ten hours a day in the saddle for two or three consecutive days.
Before the start, we recommend testing both your bike and your gear on a long ride, ideally a two-day trip close to home.
You may withdraw from the event at any time.
However, we kindly ask you to inform the Carso Trail staff as soon as possible.
In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the European emergency number 112 is active.
The same number can also be used in Slovenia.
The “CLASSIC” route does not present significant technical difficulties and includes many fast gravel sections that are ideal for gravel bikes, although there are also some rougher singletracks.
Due to the rocky terrain typical of the Karst region, a hardtail MTB or a “monster gravel” bike is generally more suitable and is therefore recommended.
The “FAST” route features smoother and more compact surfaces and can comfortably be ridden on a gravel bike.
In any case, we recommend using large-volume tires, at least 700×45.
Absolutely.
The only requirement is that you rejoin the route exactly where you left it, without skipping any sections, in order to remain eligible for the CT finisher list.
The use of a tracking app is mandatory and details will be provided when the route files are distributed.
We monitor participants’ positions periodically, 24 hours a day throughout the event.
In true UNSUPPORTED Adventure style, there are no base camps along the route.
Each participant is free to decide where, when, and how to sleep: in a tent, under the stars, or in accommodation facilities.
The routes, especially in Slovenia, pass through large remote and wild areas where accommodation options are limited.
There are no partner hotels or official lodging facilities.
The website includes overview maps showing the approximate route, the main locations crossed, and the distances between them.
You will need a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag.
Depending on your preferences, you may also want a bivy bag, tent, hammock, or tarp.
May temperatures are generally mild, but in some higher-altitude areas of inland Slovenia temperatures can be up to 10°C lower than along the coast.
We’ll be there.
We are ready to welcome finishers 24 hours a day until 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, the final day of the event.
At the start area.
Villages in inland Slovenia are generally very small and services can be limited.
Except in some larger towns, public e-bike charging stations are rare.
Yes, quite often.
In regions close to the Italian border, older generations frequently speak Italian reasonably well.
Younger people generally speak a good English everywhere.
In smaller inland villages, foreign languages is less common, but people are usually very friendly and welcoming.
Equipment choices are highly personal and depend on how you wish to experience your trail.
Essential items include:
Certified cycling helmet
Identification document
First-aid kit
Repair kit and basic tools
Front and rear lights
High-visibility vest (if riding after dark)
Spare clothing
Certainly.
From the day before the event, the No Border Village will be open, offering a camping area, toilets, and a variety of activities for participants and non-participants alike.
The route files are sent once they have been fully verified (they change every year), usually three to four weeks before the event.
You will also receive a roadbook containing all practical information and event details.
