CARSO TRAIL 2017–2027: TEN YEARS OF ADVENTURE TOGETHER

The bike trail that takes you beyond the ordinary is turning ten.Just like in its very first edition, and true to the spirit of original bikepacking, it will lead you across two countries: from the cliffs overlooking the Gulf, through the harsh and barren landscapes of the Karst Plateau, across the green hills of Goriška, and into the mysterious forests of the hinterland. Once again, a route to be shared with friends or tackled solo, available in three different versions.

But that's not all: to celebrate our 10th anniversary, we have plenty of surprises in store. First of all, registrations will open exceptionally early on June 1st, and for one month you'll have access to a special discounted entry fee.

In May 2027, the 10th edition of Carso Trail will take place.

The routes, redesigned for each edition, are currently being prepared. As always, they will offer an extraordinary variety of landscapes: from the lagoon and the sea cliffs to the Isonzo River, the Karst heathlands, the forests of Trnovski Gozd (Tarnova), and the gentle pastures of nearby Goriška.

And then there is the true protagonist of this “no border adventure”: the border itself. A line that takes us to places that are geographically close yet often culturally far away, where it feels as though time has stood still, in lands of untouched nature and a way of life shaped by traditions and rhythms that have almost been forgotten.

THE KARST

Karst or Kras in Slovenian, comes from the Indo-European root “kar”, that is rock, stone. It is a limestone plateau that extends geographically from the Julian Pre-Alps in the north-east of Italy, frames the Adriatic Sea through Slovenia and reaches the Velebit massif in the extreme north-west of Croatia.

It’s historically known for being the scene of violent battles during World War I.

It is a borderland, with an eye to the Adriatic Sea and the other to the rugged karst promontory. Surrounded by the scents of the Mediterranean, it is bright and shining more than ever when the air is made clear by the bora wind.
Famous for the landscapes, the cliffs overlooking the sea and the soft hills of the hinterland from which you can enjoy magnificent views, the Karst is a particularly valuable territory in terms of nature. Due to the geomorphological peculiarities, the caves, the sinkholes and the valleys that the water and the underground courses of the rivers have dug into the rock, the area is the paradise of geologists and, due to the extraordinary variety of vegetation, that of botanists.
